Star Anise
Star anise — the star-shaped seed pod with an intense licorice-anise flavor that defines Chinese five spice, Vietnamese pho, and the depth of slow-braised dishes across Asian cuisines. Potent enough that one pod transforms a pot of broth.
Star anise has one of the most distinctive flavor profiles in the spice world — its intense anise quality comes from anethole, the same compound found in licorice and fennel, but with a depth and warmth that neither of those can replicate. It's the defining spice of Chinese five spice powder and the backbone of Vietnamese pho broth — a single pod in a pot of stock changes the entire character of the dish. Fine Spice sources whole star anise for its visual beauty as much as its flavor — the perfect geometric star form is a sign of quality and careful harvesting.

All Fine Spice blends are made with minimal sea salt and no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or fillers. Small-batch, chef-developed, and formulated for flavor first.
HOW TO USE
Add 1-2 whole pods to pho broth, bone broth, or spiced stocks. Simmer for at least 30 minutes — the anise oils release slowly into the liquid and define the flavor of the entire broth.
Add to braising liquids for duck, pork, or beef alongside cinnamon and cloves for Chinese-inspired flavor. Remove before serving — one pod is usually enough for a full braise.
Steep in simple syrup, mulled wine, or warm cider for a licorice-forward warmth that works beautifully in cocktails and non-alcoholic warm drinks.
